Walled Cities 7: The Syrian Bride + Discussion
CACity presents a Walled Cities screening of the comedy-drama The Syrian Bride (2004) followed by a panel discussion.
Shot on location in the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights, The Syrian Bride is a powerful film about physical, mental and emotional borders and the courage it takes to cross them.
Young bride Mona knows that once she crosses the border from Israel to Syria to marry the popular TV star Tallel, who she doesn’t know, she will never be able to return to her home. However, surprises arise on the wedding day as family tensions, political divisions and various cultures collide.
Told with great humor and compassion, its story provides an emotionally stirring look at the human side of political conflict, focusing on the hopes and dreams of one family trapped in a no-man's land between two nations.
The screening will be followed by a discussion led by Dr Gul Kacmaz Erk, Lead for Architecture and Planning at Queen’s University, Belfast. Gul will be joined by special guests, Dr Erika Jimenez & Dr Drew Michael (TBC) to offer their insights into the film, and the context of the Arab-Israeli conflict.
This event is part of CACity presents: Walled Cities 7, a short film season exploring political conflict in divided communities and walled cities around the world. Presented by CACity (Cinema and Architecture in the City) Research Group, in collaboration with Queen’s University, Belfast and Film Hub NI. The film screenings will be accompanied by an exhibition of student’s work from the Cinematic Architecture courses at Queen’s.
