Rip it Up: This is England

Nerve Centre presents a special programme, Loud, Young and Free as part of Rip It Up, a UK-wide film season made possible with the support of the BFI Film Audience Network, awarding funds by The National Lottery. Loud, Young and Free pays tribute to the pioneers of youth culture by showcasing contrasting portraits of youth culture in the UK on screen from a variety of celebrated filmmakers across decades ranging from the 1960s to the 2010s.

This is England tells the story of Shaun (Thomas Turgoose), an 11-year-old kid growing up in the Midlands.

Set during the summer holidays of 1983, it follows his rites of passage from a shaggy-haired ruffian grieving the loss of his father, into a shaven headed thug whose anger and pain are embraced by the local skinhead fraternity.

Winner of the BAFTA for Best British Film and featuring a cast of stellar British acting talent including Stephen Graham, Vicky McClure and Joseph Gilgun, this iconic coming-of-age drama from writer-director Shane Meadows celebrates its 20th anniversary with this special screening to mark the occasion.
