Cinema Unbound: A Canterbury Tale (35mm)
Screenings
- 01st November 2023 - 3:00 PMBelfast International Arts Festival presents Powell & Pressburger's underrated A Canterbury's Tale (1944) in its original 35mm presentation, as part of its series Cinema Unbound: The Creative Worlds of Powell and Pressburger.
Set amidst the backdrop of the Second World War Britain, A Canterbury Tale is Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger’s (A Matter of Life and Death) compelling reworking of Chaucer’s epic story.
Largely set in Kent, A Canterbury Tale revolves around an American army sergeant, a British soldier, and a land girl who, before making a modern-day pilgrimage to Canterbury, solve the bizarre mystery of a man who pours glue over the hair of village girls at night.
Originally a box office flop for the Archers (Powell and Pressburger’s collective handle), A Canterbury Tale is a whodunnit, war film and comedy wrapped in one magical film and has since been rightly reassessed as a gentle, personal masterpiece.
Part of Cinema Unbound: The Creative Worlds of Powell and Pressburger. With support of the BFI Film Audience Network, awarding funds from the National Lottery in order to bring this project to more audiences across the UK. This screening is also part of the Belfast International Arts Festival, which takes place throughout Belfast from 12 October to 5 November.
