The Prisons Memory Archive is a collection of 175 filmed walk-and-talk recordings with those who had a connection with Armagh Gaol and the Maze and Long Kesh Prison during the conflict in and about Northern Ireland. The archive also contains video footage and photographs of both prison sites.
Thanks to support from the National Lottery Heritage Fund, a new partnership has begun between the Prisons Memory Archive (PMA), Public Record Office of Northern Ireland (PRONI) and Queen’s University Belfast (QUB). Between 2016 and 2020, a dedicated team is working to preserve the interviews, site footage and photographs held in the Prisons Memory Archive, transferring this material to PRONI. The team is also working to make the material more accessible through a new interactive website, and to engage people with the content of the Archive through outreach events and activities to help people learn about shared heritage.
The PMA screens the archive material to community groups. We also organise screenings and panel discussions of films related to the material.
