INDIs (Independent Directions) Young Filmmakers Award

The INDIs is a national film award championing and celebrating the talent of the UK’s young independent filmmakers under 25.

What is INDIs (Independent Directions)?

The INDIs is a national film award championing and celebrating the talent of the UK’s young independent filmmakers under 25.

What do we mean by ‘independent’?

  • Made without major funding or production company support.
  • The idea for the film and all the production is your own.
  • You are not working to someone else’s agenda or subject for the film e.g. school, community group, production company.

By ‘independent’ we don’t mean you have to do everything yourself. You can borrow equipment and of course have help making your film, just not from professionals.

We are not looking for films made by community groups, schools or with big organisations. .

What sort of films are we looking for?

We are looking for innovation, a cinematic eye and clever or engaging storytelling – this might be comedy, horror, drama or anything in-between and includes music, skate and promo videos.

What sort of films are we looking for?

We are looking for innovation, a cinematic eye and clever or engaging storytelling – this might be comedy, horror, drama or anything in-between and includes music, skate and promo videos.

We are looking for raw talent in filmmaking, including animation and any kind of moving image art form. Budget is not a factor. We are not judging production values, although editing and sound can be good quality without costing lots of money.

We want to give you the chance to get to the next step, a chance to talk to professionals who could help you develop your filmmaking skills. Most of all we want to give you a chance to get your film in front of an audience on the big screen.

Will all the films entered into the Festival be shown?

Not all films sent to the Festival will be screened. The films will be shortlisted by a panel of professionals. Young people from our MediaFish group, who work with us to plan the Festival, will also be involved in the selection.

Shortlisted films may be broadcast online and winners may be included on our website and included in next year’s Leeds Young Film Festival and Leeds International Film Festival. All finalists will be screened in a day of celebration of young independent filmmaking on Tuesday 29th March 2016 where a panel of moving image makers and industry professionals will be on hand to provide feedback and to decide on the winning films.

All shortlisted filmmakers will receive a certificate of nomination and the winner in each category will receive a trophy, free Arcadian Cinematic Sound Pack software and will go forward to compete for the overall INDIs prize. The £250 grand prize will be awarded by the IAC (Institute of Amateur Cinematographers) for the best overall independent film. For the first time, all shortlisted entries will also compete for our new MMBF Rising Star Award, with a £250 cash prize by the Matthew  Martino Benevolent Fund.

How will I know if my film has been selected?

If your film is successful, we will contact you by Friday 26th February 2016 at the latest. If you do not hear from us by then your film has not been selected but there are many Film Festivals you can apply to, have a look at the attached list.

If your film is selected you must be able to attend the INDIs event and awards ceremony on Tuesday 29th March 2016.
